The Institutional Brokers Estimates System (I/B/E/S, as part of Thomson Reuters) provides consensus and detail forecasts from security analysts, including earnings per share, revenue, cash flow, long-term growth projections and stock recommendations. 

I/B/E/S databases contain financial analysts' earnings forecasts for a wide range of  U.S. and international firms. The I/B/E/S database currently covers over 69,000 companies in 90 countries. It gathers earnings estimates from over 1300 firms, from largest global houses to regional and local brokers. For detailed data information, go to documentation or the vendor site. 

 

Important note to users by using I/B/E/S data:

It is no longer necessary to submit a Statement of Conditional Use for Academic Users before using I/B/E/S data. However, the data provider, Thomson Financial requires all users continue to use the citation, Please refer to Acknowledge(s), that Thomson Financial recommend. Also we would like to remind the researchers to send an electronic version of their findings/research to the Thomson Financial by email.

File Descriptions

Starting in 1976 for US forecasts and 1987 for International forecasts, I/B/E/S History contains records on over 69,000 companies across 90 countries. The Daily Detail Earnings Estimate History is a database containing over twelve years of forecast changes for U.S. companies (over nine years of forecast changes for non-U.S. companies). This database has been built primarily from monthly detail files I/B/E/S has archived over the years. It encompasses earnings estimates from more than 600 brokerage houses and 4000 individual analysts.

Issues or Changes

In the fall of 2000, The Thomson Corporation acquired Primark and its stable of brands, among them I/B/E/S and Datastream. Since then, Thomson Reuters has integrated I/B/E/S, First Call and Datastream into an organization focused on research and analytics.
